Opera Simulcast

Simon Keenlyside from Opera Chic
If you ever get the chance, go to a simulcast of one of the Metropolitan Opera’s productions. They’re shown in local theaters and are, well, incredible. I’ve been to the Met, and I’m beginning to like the simulcasts more. Why? Because the camera work–especially the closeups–are something you could never get live. Unless you can afford front-row tickets, which I can’t. Plus, after every act, Renée Fleming, one of my favorite sopranos, conducts interviews with the principals!
Yesterday I attended the simulcast of “Hamlet.” It was one of the best I’ve seen, hands down. The three leads, Simon Keenlyside, Marlis Petersen and Jennifer Larmore were incredible. The voices, the acting…superb. I was on the edge of my seat–literally–through the whole thing. Even if Hamlet isn’t your cup of tea, see this.</div

Afternoon at the Zoo

Since my stepdaughter is home for spring break, we decided to take her to the zoo. It was a perfect spring day and the birds were looking good….
Blue plumage Wish I could tell you the name of this bird, but I’ve forgotten all of them. Pretty wild feathers on top of the head, eh?
stare This owl was staring right at me.

Having fun with PhotoScape

Oh good, the font choice box is back today. Life in Blog Land is full of surprises.

So yesterday, I thought I’d play around with PhotoScape, a FREE photo-editing software program like Photoshop. I love this photo that my beautiful niece took with her phone camera. I can’t remember exactly what I did, but do know I used the Pictorialization Filter and color deepen tool. If you’re thinking I’m a ditz, you would be partly right. I’m not stupid, but I can be forgetful and disorganized sometimes. Next time I’ll record what I use, but this was the first foray, and I was in experimental mode.

Here’s the original photo of my niece with her horse Gabby:

And here’s my altered version:

I love that she’s with her horse and I even like the tractor in the background, keepin’ it real. The pixelation isn’t nearly as noticeable in the final print. I smoothed out the skin tones before printing too. The final result on canvas was gorgeous, if I say so myself.

I’m usually leery of free downloads, but PhotoScape has proven to be quite safe. I heard about it from another blogger who’s very up on these things.

Cheers!

Latté Bars

OK, so Weight Watchers makes the best frozen treat called “GIANT Latté Bars”! I don’t normally endorse stuff, but these are so good, I feel it’s my duty to pass this on. They are so big, so creamy and DELICIOUS. Not all icey like most low-cal stuff. And if you like coffee ice cream, you will love these. The best part? Only 90 calories.

It’s been a loooong time

Wow, I’ve been away for a stretch. I’ve been working on another blog on a different platform and not having a whole lotta’ fun. I couldn’t even figure out how to change the fonts, and I consider myself fairly computer-literate. Not sure if I’ll keep working on two different blogs, but will try to stay with this one more regularly.

Where to start? How about with some photos of amazingly beautiful furniture by British designer Deborah Swift from couchgb.com? She puts incredible fabrics together and then upholsters great furniture with them. I have nowhere to put something like this, but I love her stuff. Aren’t these dining room chairs just crazy cool?

Maybe I could just buy one and look at it all day. Just kidding, honey!

What a lovely vignette. Deborah really has a talent for choosing and combining fabrics, doesn’t she?

Y’know, I didn’t intend for this to be a design blog, but I am drawn to beautiful decorating. I guess I’ll just do a little of this and a little of that. I’ve noticed the blogs I like the most have more than one dimension. Except for the writing blogs, and I like that just fine.

New Powder Room

[Update, March 22, 2012. Three years since we completed the project, people are still looking at this post, so I thought I would replace the old, too-small photos with larger ones. Plus I found the paint chips and added that info.]

PR

This is our new powder room! I love the vintage feel–perfect for this 75 year-old house. The process took a few months, because the space used to be a seldom-used porch. If I’d known I was going to be designing it, I may have chickened out. But our contractor talked me through it and gave me wonderful suggestions. I also scoured books on vintage cottages and bathrooms, which helped immensely.

PR sink, mirror

The paint is a soft bluish-gray called “Ice cap” by Benjamin Moore, with Duron “Ibis white” trim. They match the floor tiles perfectly.

PR faucet

I love the vintage-y faucet. It’s polished nickel.

PR windows

The beadboard was already on the ceiling–we added it to the walls as well.

PR lights +windows

The medicine cab and lighting are from Restoration Hardware.

PR window

I like that the octagonal window is the same shape as the blue-gray and white tiles. I had to draw the window on newsprint and figure out all the angles with my brilliant mathematician husband.

silk peony

The pink silk peony came from a now-shuttered Home Depot Expo Center.

Our contractor managed to squeeze a tiny casement window on the other side of the mirror, so the outside of the house wouldn’t look weird with a big window on just one side. The framed print is an Italian “postcard” I bought in California.

Here’s a closer look:

This is how the space looked before. It was basically a spot to store my stepdaughter’s shoes. The benches were freebies from a law office.

The white brick is the original front wall of the house. We kept that, and painted it with the “ice cap.” The windows were all replaced.

It is soooo nice to have a powder room on the main floor. At first, I thought my husband was kidding when he said we had to go upstairs or downstairs. After some discussion, we decided to convert the front porch into a foyer and powder room. Here are a couple of shots of the new foyer:

I have a round glass table with an antique bronze base, but it’s too big for the space, so I found an inexpensive black console table. We had ceramic tile that looks like stone put down in the foyer and in another powder room in the basement. The small chandelier is now a favorite.

Thanks so much for looking!

First Snow & Carmen Miranda

Well, we got our first snow this weekend and it’s kind of wet and gloppy and icy at the same time. I wasn’t quite ready for the cold after ten days in Spain and a week in Texas, but I’ll survive, I’m sure. What’s amazing is that my pot of geraniums is hanging on for mere life. I hope they make it until January at least. I think they’ll be OK if I keep them close to the house where they are.

Can I bring them inside for the winter? No one does that here, but maybe my geraniums will think they’re in California, ha.

I do love holly….this tree is right in front of our house.

Here’s one more picture from our stay in Austin. This creature was atop one of the shops near Uncommon Objects on South Congress St. Not sure what you’d call this zebra that looks like Carmen Miranda, but she is colorful, isn’t she??
SoCo zebra IA closeup. The sky was soooo blue that day.
