Farewell to P-town

Love & happiness

Isn’t the marquee perfect for this place? The colors in Provincetown are pretty glorious.

Portuguese bakery girl

The polar opposite. I was so struck by how sad this girl in the Portuguese bakery looked. To me, her demeanor said more than, “This job sucks.” I was hoping she’d cheer up, but she looked the same when we walked by later. Maybe it was just a bad day.

Tim's Used Books

Two of my favorite things: old signs and books.

living statue

A living statue much like the one we encountered in Barcelona:

It can’t be easy to wear bronze makeup and hold poses all day long. My hat’s off.

Provincetown

And then there’s just plain statuesque. The contrast between the red and blue, short and tall–love it.

Provincetown and neon

Have you ever seen a red sunflower? I’m kind of partial to the yellow ones growing in Provence, but this looks kind of nice with the pink roses, don’t you think?

More shots of Provincetown. Oh, yesterday WordPress suggested a “similar story” to mine. It was about a shooting, as in murder. Guess I need to say “photographing” more?

Ptown ceramic bowls

How great are these bowls?

Ptown nautical store2

I’m not into nautical themes after growing up in the landlocked Midwest, but this store is one of the nicest I’ve seen.

Ptown nautical store1

The guy who runs the place is really nice too.

Ptown nautical store3
I was surprised to learn that most of these shops are open only in the summer.

In P-town you can see ice-cream-colored stores:

Twist'd Sisters

Let me warn you right now that I love neon signs. Love them. You will see them on my blog fairly often, should you choose to continue. I’d own one, but I’m strangely frightened of neon gas. If that sign breaks, it’s really bad for you and the environment.

neon cheese steaks

Is cheesesteak really one word? Webster says so, but it looks weird to me.

Neon cocktails

Lobster Pot

See you tomorrow, people. Have a great one.

The crazy mix that is Provincetown

 Provincetown mist

While in Cape Cod, we decided to spend a day in Provincetown. Mr. Prose and I, that is–his daughter spent the day at the beach with her aunt. For the shot above, I used a trick another photographer taught me. If you’re shooting into the sun, you have to “fool” the camera or it will overcompensate for all the extra light. I pointed the camera down, pressed the shutter halfway, then raised the camera up to the house and hollyhocks. If I hadn’t, the house and flowers would be really dark. I also added a little blurring and soft light.

As for my title. You’ve probably heard that Provincetown is predominantly gay, but I’m not talking about that. (But I do have a new appreciation of the alienation my gay friends have talked about. We were one of a handful of straight couples in a sea of gay men. It was like being in a mating ritual, only we were invisible.) No, the crazy mix I’m talking about is this:

Ptown display window

Lovely shop windows

Provincetown bunting

beautiful beach houses

garden ornament

interesting gardens

what doesn't belong here?

plastic parrots and a monkey

beach decor

fake surfboards and a vintage sewing machine

pink hardy hibiscus

a really nice hardy hibiscus.

basic outdoor furniture

a verrrrrry basic outdoor living room

blue hardy hibiscus

and another hardy hibiscus (Can you believe this color? I want one.)

More tomorrow.

A little touch of Provence…

…on the island of Nantucket. The sun was setting, we were waiting for our ferry and the shopkeeper was occupied. Right after I took this shot, she came out, sat down and smoked until we left. Timing really is everything.

Just another Nantucket window and flower box.

Tomorrow, Provincetown.

Inside Hillwood

As I said on Thursday, I took some shots of the Hillwood mansion interiors on the sly with my iPhone. These photos are pretty rough, because I took them very quickly. Photography is kind of not allowed, but no one said anything about cell phones. I’m not usually a rule-breaker, except in photography. I didn’t use flash at all, so nothing was damaged. I think the people running Hillwood would do better protecting those priceless Oriental rugs from all the foot traffic….

On to the mansion:

Hwood FP

French drawing room. The mantel and paneling are from Parisian homes dating to King Louis XVI. While walking through the place, I felt more like I was in a chateau in the Loire River Valley than an American home. Mrs. Post was a collector extraordinaire (and one of the richest women in America.)

Hwood settees

Another view of the drawing room. Tapestries were made in the 1730s by the Beauvais factory in France.

Hwood DR

Dining room. Random fact: Mrs. Post had the Italian table built for her Palm Beach home, Mar-A-Lago, now owned by Donald Trump. Her will stipulated that the table be brought back to Hillwood.

Hillwood brm

The room I wanted to photograph most, the bedroom. There were people everywhere, so all I have is a photo from the brochure. If they’re not going to allow standard photography, why not publish the brochure in full color? I guess that’s the way to get people to visit. This bedroom is quite museum-like, don’t you think? That really applies to the whole place, in my opinion.

Hwood candelabra

Love this table and chandelier. Is it me, or are the chandeliers in all these pictures kind of sideways? An iPhone phenomenon, or is Marjorie having fun with me?

Hwood breakfast rm

Breakfast room. According to Hillwood’s brochure, the chandelier is from Catherine Palace, “one of Catherine the Great’s favorite residences outside St. Petersburg.”

Hillwood brochure

The cover of the Hillwood brochure. The plain exterior belies the ornate interior, yes? By the way, if you’re into fine china, this is the place. There are separate rooms for the French and Russian porcelain collections alone.

Probably the most important objects in the house are two Fabergé eggs. They were gifts from Tsar Nicholas II to his mother. There were guards in that area, so I couldn’t photograph. No worries, I looked them up on line. You can see the Twelve Monograms Easter Egg here and the Catherine the Great Easter Egg here.

Well, I did get busted after all. After I took two shots of this lovely houseplant in the visitor center, a very nice employee told me they don’t allow photography inside any of the buildings. I was about to tell him they allow photography at Versailles, but didn’t.

Have a great Monday, everyone!

More Hillwood

More about Hillwood. Marjorie Merriweather Post was the daughter of C.W. Post of the Post cereal (General Mills) fortunes. The estate and gardens are now open for the public to enjoy. A random fact: the actress Dina Merrill is one of Post’s daughters. Her father? None other than E.F. Hutton.

Yesterday I posted some photos from the cutting garden and greenhouse. Here are a few more:

Hillwood rose

Just for fun, I shot the same rose with my iPhone:

Hillwood rose

Interesting effect, I think. Almost like a colored-pencil drawing.

Hillwood zinnia

Dahlia

Diana

We liked the statue of Diana, Roman goddess of the hunt, but the next one left us scratching our heads….

Hillwood sphinx

Those are lion’s legs, so that would make her…a female sphinx.

Hillwood putting green

According to the Hillwood brochure, “Mrs. Post believed in living a healthy lifestyle with plenty of fresh air and exercise. She favored dance and golf to keep physically active.” Hence the putting green.

Hillwood orchids

whirling dervishes

Some gorgeous orchids in the greenhouse. I’ve never seen these before. Does anyone know the names? Generally, I’ll put the name in if I know it, but ten years in California made me forget a lot of East Coast plants. I once knew them all in Latin too, sigh.

Finally, a shot of some potted caladiums outside the visitor center. Too much sun, but I like the way it sets the leaves afire.

Have a great one!

Lots going on today, so just some shots from Hillwood, the former estate of Marjorie Merriweather Post. I’ll tell you more about it tomorrow.

Browsing in Nantucket

While in Nantucket, we ducked into a shop that was so beautifully laid out, I had to take photos. Enjoy:

Nantucket boutique 1

I could hardly believe it when I spied these:

Nantucket flatware

They look exactly the same as the flatware I photographed at a boutique in the D.C. area here. They’re even in very similar metal containers. Do you suppose the manufacturer sends the containers and how to display them to all their buyers?

Finally, a really sweet children’s boutique. I love this window display:

Hope you all had a nice weekend.

A lighthouse and some eye candy

Isn’t she a beauty? I love this lighthouse, and am so glad the light was good when we came by. It’s the Sankaty Head lighthouse near Siasconset, Nantucket. They actually moved this thing back in 2007 because of erosion.

Siasconset again. You can stay at the Cliffside Beach Club for a mere US$895 a night. 😉

I’ll leave you with some Nantucket eye candy….

I’d like to eat breakfast here every morning. Do you think the shopkeeper would mind?

Have a great weekend, everyone. Monday’s a holiday in the States, so I’ll just post a pic (or two).

P.S. I’m toying with the idea of a separate page for my “musings.” Some have asked for more writing, so I’ll work on getting that page up soon. You may have also noticed my blogroll is missing. It was getting so long, I decided to put it on a separate page as well. There are some really beautiful blog buttons/badges out there! I dream of having one…someday.
