A rose and an update

This rose is from a beautiful bouquet my husband gave me for Valentine’s Day. Isn’t the yellow incredible?

I’ll be off again tomorrow. An update: my painting class is going better! I wasn’t having a great time last week. Our instructor is a very nice guy, but kind of “hands-off,” in that he gives almost no direction. I probably should have taken a beginner’s class before this one, but the course description said, “beginners welcome.” What that actually means is, “You will be totally lost the first two weeks. Good luck to ya.” After much experimentation, I’m finally getting the hang of it and enjoying the whole process. My painting is not great, but it’s not horrible either. I’m glad I stuck with it.

Great weekend, everyone!

Lunch in Georgetown?

Gtown theatre sign

How about lunch in Georgetown*? On the way to a favorite French bistro, we’ll pass the old Georgetown theatre, the former site of many a French film, now a jewel center. Some of the theatre seats were covered with a cloth because they were broken, and your shoes stuck to the floor. Oh, but those movies were good.

Gtown shops

Georgetown has lots of old, historic buildings that house typical American fare, like White House/Black Market or Steve Madden.

There are some pretty cool window displays too.

You may even see a C&O Canal barge in dry dock (I think that’s what’s going on here):

C&O barge

But here we are at Café La Ruche, which means “beehive cafe.”

Cafe la Ruche

It’s not much to look at from the outside, but bistros aren’t meant to be fancy.

What we came for was this:

Quiche Savoyarde

and this:

Croque Monsieur

and this:

apple dumpling

I don’t remember ever having an apple dumpling in France, but who am I to quibble? It was divine. Thank heaven Mr. Prose was there to share it. When I was in Paris, you were supposed to have café au lait for breakfast, but the Frenchman next to us ordered one, so I followed suit.

*For those unfamiliar with Washington, D.C., Georgetown is a beautiful, old neighborhood northwest of the city. Georgetown University is there, along with a lot of very expensive mansions and great shops and restaurants. Parking can be a nightmare, but we lucked out and found a spot right in front of the cafe.

Daffodils in the sun

The other day, I was sitting at the dining room table and suddenly looked up. The daffodils I’d bought the day before had opened, and warm sunlight was flooding the yellow walls in our living room. I grabbed my camera and took the shot below. I love when that happens.

Signs of spring

Then next day, I tried to re-create the photo. After all, the EXIF data gave me the exact time of day, the aperture setting, shutter speed, everything. But no matter how I tried, I couldn’t duplicate the image. I don’t know how the light could be different just twenty-four hours later, but it was. Proof that photography is capturing a fleeting moment.

So I turned around, removed the tablecloth and captured the daffodils from the opposite direction:

Another view

And just for fun, an iPhone shot (Polarize app):

♥Happy Valentine’s Day♥

[Daffodils tomorrow–I wasn’t thinking of Valentine’s Day last Thursday.]

Love is immeasurable

Love is immeasurable.

Perseverance

When you come to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hold on.
~Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Something sweet

Saltwater taffy, anyone?

Happy day before Valentine's Day!
Perhaps frosted sugar cookies are more to your liking. Right now, I’d rather have these than expensive chocolates. They remind me of the Swedish cookies I loved when I was little.

Day Thirty-five

You really can’t go wrong with roses on this Valentine’s Day, 2011. I hope your day is memorable. ♥

Need some color?

I do. These grayish-brown days of winter are really getting old.

Day Twenty-six

My favorite bowl from anthropologie filled with lemons. Yes, lemons. I was shooting in natural light with tungsten bulbs overhead and a halogen lamp on one side. I fiddled with the white balance a dozen times and finally gave up. Only the lemons are the wrong color, so I’m happy with the results.

Clementines from Spain. They have them at the grocery store about once a year and you have to buy a whole case. Luckily, they’re small and very sweet.

Day Thirty-eight

Dark chocolate Hershey Kisses next to a pothos. My husband prefers dark chocolate, so I keep these around for him. I love chocolate, but I can resist the dark variety. One is enough, thank you.

Just a reminder that I’ll be off tomorrow. Have a great weekend, everyone….

Meanwhile, back in Paris….

I have some new subscribers, so if you don’t mind, I’m going to put up the guest post I did for A Lady in France a while back. It’s the least I can do after subjecting you to winterscapes yesterday.

*******

Paris is one of my favorite cities, and I think Lady Jennie is really lucky to be living there. I never get tired of this view of the Eiffel Tower taken from the Arc de Triomphe just before sunset.

Tour Eiffel

I think Paris has some of the most beautiful doors in the world. Whether they’re of hand-carved wood set in lovely old stone…

Paris door 1

Or simply painted in that inimitable French blue, they’re works of art, in my opinion.

I also love the windows of Paris with their wrought iron, flower boxes and lace curtains.

Cinquième

Paris window

How I wish I could re-create this look in the U.S., but it’s just not the same.

Even the radishes are beautiful in Paris. The markets on rue Mouffetard are a must, especially if you like eating and photographing great food.

Paris radishes

For me, one of the things that embodies Paris is the Citroën  “Deux Chevaux.” I prefer them old and faded, but I wouldn’t turn down this bright red version either.

A bientôt….

A little more snow and ice

I do believe spring is just around the corner, but we still have some snow on the ground, so I’ll post just a few more snow and ice pics (no pun intended).

Ivy is just about the only green thing around these days. I like the blue tones in the background.

Ice on the camellias…

…and on the azaleas.

An early-morning winter sky.

If you need some warming up, here’s another bowl of  phở ga, taken with the iPhone:

Let’s pretend it’s spring…

…if only for a moment.

A bouquet of pink roses to help you forget the ice and snow in many parts of the world. Spring is just around the corner, right? Oh, it is the best season in the D.C. area–azaleas, tulips, lilacs, daffodils, viburnum, etc. etc. etc.

I won’t be blogging on Fridays for a while, as I’ve signed up for a painting class on Thursday nights. Have wanted to do this for ages, and finally everything fell into place. Scary, but exciting too.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

I ♥ Tea

Thanks so much for the get-well wishes yesterday, everyone. You guys are the best! I’m feeling a lot better today–no more fatigue or body aches, just the sniffles.

Something that often makes me feel better is a cup of tea, so here are a few shots of them.

Two for Tea {explore}

These are from the set of antique teacups I featured here a while back. This time I’ve added the blue cup and saucer.

Day Twenty-four

Inspired by Merisi of Vienna for Beginners. The china was my mother’s. I love the simple white with a gold, embossed band. Almost every kind of food looks good on it.

Just the pink and aqua this time.

Have a great rest of the day….

Snow fences

I’m sorry I didn’t answer your comments yesterday–I’ve been sick since the weekend and still not up to par. Hope to feel better tomorrow. In the meantime, here’s another winterscape….
