Strolling Around Spanish Village

Spanish Village

Spanish Village, in Balboa Park, is a collection of working artist studios and galleries.

The colors of the place tend to mesmerize.

Succulents and Mariachi Bands

I was going to include these photos in my last post, but didn’t want to put you to sleep with too many images. So here are some succulent topiaries found in the Mexican Garden at San Diego Botanic Garden:

mariachis

violinist

I do like mariachi bands. They play at Mexican restaurants all over San Diego and some of the singers are really wonderful. “Besame Mucho” gets me every time. This succulent mariachi band is playing for a nearby couple:

These two look like they could use some water. 😉

topiary dancers

I’m not sure these really qualify as topiaries. They could have just planted a lot of succulents in a growing medium within the forms, instead of training the plants. I’ll ask the next time we’re there.

She definitely has the best outfit.

orange succulents

I’m becoming a big fan of succulents. Low maintenance, low water, beautiful. I once lived near a house with nothing but succulents in the front yard. It looked kind of strange the first year, but later transformed into a lovely garden. I’ll have to see how it looks now and take some photos.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

A Walk Through San Diego Botanic Garden

San Diego Botanic Garden used to be called Quail Botanical Gardens. The name was changed a few years ago, but I still think of it as Quail Gardens. When we were there, a man told us there are now actual quail running around the gardens, but there weren’t any before the name change. We didn’t see any of the birds, but we did find some great-looking plants:

succulent garden

I don’t know how many types of succulents there are, but I have a feeling most of them are in this garden.

calla

I’ve grown calla lilies before (they grow like weeds in California) but never saw this much green on the petals.

red passion flower?

All these years I thought passion flowers were only purplish blue.

Dutchman's Pipe

Giant Dutchman’s Pipe is rather strange-looking, isn’t it?

The garden has a cool lookout

where you can see the ocean and feel the sea breezes:

On the walkway to the lookout you’ll encounter these yellow beauties:

bromeliad

I love the riotous colors in the blooms of this bromeliad.

heliotrope

That old standby, heliotrope, is for sale in the garden shop.

patina

How great is the patina on this?

I was so surprised to see African tulip trees like the ones in Hawaii, because I’ve never seen them anywhere else in San Diego.

African Tulip Tree

These are a little redder than the blossoms in Maui, and the yellow border is more pronounced.

The botanic garden is pretty big, so I’ll be taking more photos in the future.

Hope your week’s going well so far. . . .

Clouds

Monday is a holiday in the U.S. (Labor Day) so I’ll be back on Wednesday. Have a great weekend, everyone!

Trapped in the Marine Layer

In Coastal California, we have something called the “marine layer,” an air mass which forms over the ocean when there’s a temperature inversion. According to Wikipedia, “the inversion itself is usually initiated by the cooling effect of the water on the surface layer of an otherwise warm air mass. As it cools, the surface air becomes denser than the warmer air above it, and thus becomes trapped below it.” Usually, the marine layer bakes off by noon or earlier. Once in a while, it stays over land and the ground will be wet, but there’s no rain or drizzle. It’s like the air is “sweating.”

When this happened one day last week, the moisture made some unusual formations on our roses:

dark pink

It almost looks like bubble wrap or crystallized sugar, doesn’t it? I just found out the name of this rose: “Miss All-American Beauty.”

pink bubbles

This peach-colored rose, my favorite, is “Mother of Pearl.”

white rose bubbles

I’m not crazy about white roses, but this “John F. Kennedy” is starting to growing on me, no pun intended.

Hope your week’s going well so far. . . .

Outside the Art Walk

We went to an Art Walk yesterday, and the artwork was nice, but the surroundings really caught my eye.

Mother Nature provides the perfect backdrop for these colors.

Unlocked

I do love peeling paint and old doors. People look at me so funny when I shoot stuff like this.

I’ve photographed this salon before. Not your everyday workplace.

Not Just Any Dress

Thanks to Caroline of the blog beautyisasleepingcat (fantastic book reviews!) I remembered some photos I took before we moved.

While sorting stuff, I was trying to decide if I should finally sell a couple of my mother’s dresses, and thought I’d photograph them for keepsakes. My favorite is this simple black dress with pink appliques:

dress front

Couldn’t believe the pink in the dress matched my stepdaughter’s bedroom walls.

I come from a line of tall women: my mother and both grandmothers were 5’8″ tall! I’m an inch taller.

Here’s the lovely back:

back

Yes, that’s my faithful assistant, Rocky. 🙂

A closer look:

back detail

I don’t know what the fabric is. It’s kind of like satin and rayon combined–a bit heavy, but it drapes beautifully.

Here’s a close-up of the front:

close-up

I’ve carried this dress around for almost two decades, keeping it in a garment bag at the back of my closet, bringing it out from time to time to make sure it’s still intact. I’ve let go of the red satin taffeta ball gown (it wasn’t in good shape at all) but this one I’ll keep. I wish I’d asked my mom where and when she wore it. It must have been special, because she saved the dress for years and years too.

Tangerine Sunset

The night before our trip, we had a pretty wonderful sunset. From the northwest we saw this:

Tangerine Sky

From the north:

And from the west, a tangerine sky framed by neighboring cedars:

Cedars

Quite a nice send-off, don’t you think?

A Peony Found

I took only family photos on our trip, so I’m posting a peony shot that got lost in the shuffle when I was in Hawaii. . . .

Happy Mother's Day!

Hope you all had a nice weekend.
