Swingin’ at the Del Mar Fair

It’s actually the San Diego County Fair, but for decades it was Del Mar Fair, so that’s what I call it. Anyway, I’ve always wanted to photograph those pastel swing carousel things and decided to give it a go with the iPhone. No way I was lugging a DSLR around fairgrounds all day long.

First up, the “Wave Swinger” at rest:

Next, the same photo with some brightening, cross processing and desaturation for a vintage look:

Then, two Instagram versions created with the PhotoToaster app:

I deliberately rotated the image for more interest.

This time, the swings in action:

Lastly, an Instagram version with the Amaro filter:

If you ever forget what filter you used on an instagram, look up the photo on Webstagram and you’ll see the filter name in the upper right corner. Webstagram also makes it easier to view instagrams and comment, because you’re on a computer keyboard rather than that tiny iPhone keypad. I have skinny fingers, but I still make typos on the phone.

Great weekend, everyone!

Great post, I like this type of carousel. Great effects. my favourites are no 3 and the last. On the last those little chairs look 3D. And number three has the nicest colours.

    • Thanks, Caroline. I have to say I was surprised by the effect on the last two photos. The iPhone froze the action really well and the people look kind of surreal. Amaro is becoming one of my favorite instagram filters.

  2. The last two with the swings are terrific. It feels like the photo is in motion.
Did you take a ride after you were done shooting? 🙂

    • Thanks, Jackie.
Ahem, not a fan of heights here, so I stayed on the ground. I had already gone on the ferris wheel and the skyride, where I nearly lost a sandal, so I was done. 🙂

Great photos. My faves are number 3 and 5. Not sure I can actually go on this ride or my travel companions would probably suffer more.

    • Thanks, TBM. I got a little panicky on the ferris wheel when it would sway, but worked through it. Really wish I didn’t have the heights thing.

I have the motion thing. Most forms of transportation makes me ill. Getting to and from places is not fun for me. But I still love to travel–once I’ve arrived.

  4. I have the motion thing too, unfortunately, but it’s gotten better as I’ve gotten older. I can read on planes and trains, but not in cars. Thought I was OK on boats until I went on a catamaran in Hawaii. Very bad motion sickness.
