California Colors

I’d almost, almost forgotten how beautiful the colors are in California. . . .

Yes, the skies really are that blue here. The tree with the striking yellow blooms is a gold medallion (Cassia leptophylla).

One of the lovely boutiques in the Cedros Design District of Solana Beach, and the ever-present red convertible.

They even have hydrangeas here!

Hope your week’s going well so far. . . .

Lavender Azaleas

I’m digging into the archives this time as I spent most of yesterday unpacking the last boxes. Still don’t have my good monitor hooked up, but that should happen soon. It’s pretty much impossible to get a good read on a flexible laptop screen.

Here are some lavender azaleas that were growing in our yard this spring. . . .

Even though I will miss azaleas, we have jasmine, gardenias, roses, bird of paradise, cannas and agapanthus in our new garden! All my California favorites.

Rocky Remembers

Six years ago, we lived in a house with sliding glass doors that led to the patio. There was also a sliding screen door to let in fresh air. The screen door squeaked slightly when we moved it, and Rocky seemed to think a mouse or some other animal lived inside. He would run to the door and stand there waiting for “Mousie” (our name) to come out. He would have stayed there all day if we’d let him.

Our new house also has a sliding screen door, and the first time I opened it, Rocky ran to it and did this:

I can’t believe he remembers. It’s been six years. And this door doesn’t even squeak. Every time Rocky stands there waiting, I have to say, “Mousie is gone, Rocky. All gone.” Then he gives up the vigil. Until the next time. What goes through a dog’s mind? I need the Dog Whisperer. 🙂

And please excuse the clutter–we’re still unpacking.

Great weekend, everyone!

Mexican Food, I’ve Missed You

One of the things I missed most while living in the D.C. area was really good Mexican food. We stopped at a favorite restaurant in San Diego County and I thoroughly enjoyed this taco chicken salad:

The decor was pretty colorful and lively too.

Even the ceiling detail was beautiful. . . .

Hope your week’s going well. . . .

Stepping Patterns

I shot this instagram somewhere in West Texas. . . .

Hope you’re all doing well. I may have underestimated how long it takes to unpack an entire house. Though we’ve worked like dogs for the past week, we’re still not done. We’re doing the office last, so I don’t even have my nice monitor to work with. Hopefully that situation will change soon. My Nikon may have cobwebs when I open up the camera bag this week.

A Southwest Sky

This was taken somewhere in the Southwest–either New Mexico or Arizona. The skies are so blue and the clouds so beautiful. It was over 100F. when I took this and I had to watch for rattlesnakes.

Great weekend, everyone!

Happy Fourth!

It’s the Fourth of July, our Independence Day, so I’ll wish you a safe and happy holiday if you’re in the U.S., or a great Wednesday!

Remembrance

My husband has informed me that the fifteen stars and stripes stand for the fifteen existing United States. It was a flag like this that inspired Francis Scott Key to compose the poem “Defence of Fort McHenry” during the War of 1812.
I was surprised to learn that the “poem was set to the tune of a popular British song written by John Stafford Smith for the Anacreontic Society, a men’s social club in London,” according to Wikipedia. Ironic, considering the war was between the U.S. and the British Empire.

Photo taken in Chestertown, Maryland.

Color Explosion

We had dinner at a very colorful Mexican restaurant in Austin, Texas, and the orange flowers with the pink stucco and blue dome made kind of a striking combination. . . .

Movers arrived yesterday (one day late) so we are surrounded by chaos. Hope to be on my regular blogging schedule soon.

Crape Myrtle in Hope

Well, we made it to California safe and sound. No breakdowns or overheating and the car is fine too. 🙂 I don’t recommend driving against the Western sun for a week when the temp is as high as 113 F., but we survived.

The crape myrtles in Arkansas are really beautiful. They even grow near the freeway in lousy soil. I shot this in Hope, Ark. Yes, Bill Clinton’s home town. I can’t believe the iPhone captured sun rays and flares:

I cropped this square for Instagram.

One change due to the new location: I’ll be posting three hours later. I’m up early today, but that’s because I’m not used to the new time zone yet.

Great weekend, everyone!
