Watercolor Skies

One weekend in August we had some high temps, so decided to see a movie. When we emerged from the theater we saw this:

Does Your Pumpkin Have Warts?

french_lace_pumpkin_web

How crazy is this thing? I did some research and it’s called a French Heirloom Wart Lace Pumpkin. Also known as Galeux D’Eyesines, which means “embroidered with warts from Eysines.” Believe it or not, this pumpkin is edible. Here’s a recipe for French Heirloom Pumpkin Soup. I haven’t made it yet (too warm for soup here) but it sounds really good. Definitely get rid of the warts.

**************

French Heirloom Pumpkin Soup (from The [ex] Patriate’s Kitchen)

1 5-6 lb. pumpkin (Galeux D’Eyesines, Rouge Vif D’Etampes, or Musquee de Provence)
2 tbs. olive oil
2 leeks, sliced
1 yellow onion, diced
2 sprigs rosemary, chopped
3 sprigs thyme, chopped
1 tbs. chopped sage
1/2 bunch Italian parsley, chopped
8 cups chicken broth
3 tbs. butter
1/3 cup half and half
1 tbs. sugar, optional
pinch nutmeg
salt and pepper to taste

First, get a sharp knife. Cut the pumpkin in half, scoop out seeds. Cut the halves into manageable chunks, then cut away the outer rind. Dice the flesh into 1-inch cubes. It’s really not so hard if you have a good chef’s knife.

Heat the olive oil in a large stock pot, medium heat. Add the leeks, onion and herbs and sweat the aromatics until translucent, about 10 minutes. Add the pumpkin cubes and the chicken stock and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to a simmer, cover and let simmer until the pumpkin is tender, about 20-30 minutes.

Puree using an immersion blender. Swirl in the butter and the half and half. Add the nutmeg, then taste and adjust the salt and pepper as needed. Use the sugar if you like a slight sweetness to your soups.

Great weekend, everyone!

Reflections at Parque de María Luisa

I’ve recently noticed an upsurge in views of this photo on Flickr, so decided to put it on the blog.

sevilla_reflections_web

This was taken at Parque de María Luisa, or Maria Luisa Park in Sevilla, Spain, where we honeymooned five years ago. The grounds were formerly the gardens of the Palace of San Telmo and the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929 was held here.

A horizontal view of the same place:

It was really hot the day we were there, so this was kind of an oasis for us.

Great weekend, everyone!

Travel Scan: House in Transylvania

I finally got some of my old slides scanned onto CDs. Some turned out great, some … not. I was using my boyfriend’s camera back then, and it was my first SLR. I had no idea what I was doing, and had to ask him what settings to use for the first roll or two. After a while, I noticed he kept giving me the same settings, so I started doing what I wanted. It’s kind of a miracle that the shots turned out at all. I’m so used to instant results with my digital camera, I’m amazed that I could wait for months to see the results.

transylvania_house_web

It’s been a while, but I’m pretty sure this is a house. We were traveling through Transylvania and had stopped for gas when I spotted the place. Transylvania isn’t creepy at all, even though it’s the setting for Dracula. The Carpathian Mountains are green and beautiful and the people very friendly.

Hope your week’s going well so far . . . .

Scenes From Old Town, Part II

More colors of Mexico in Old Town San Diego:

It’s been a long time since I’ve eaten here, but they used to have great chicken quesadillas.

The landscaping around the shops and restaurants provides a nice counterpoint to all the vivid colors.

I thought this little table under the palms looked especially inviting.

Scenes From Old Town, Part I

old_town_banner_web

Old Town is one of the most popular tourist destinations in San Diego. It’s the first European settlement on the West Coast, and you can go inside historic buildings free of charge. We’ve done that before, so opted to stroll around the shops and restaurants. I’ll do a post on the old buildings in the future, as my favorite, the Mason schoolhouse, was closed for renovation.

You can get really good Mexican food in Old Town, complete with handmade tortillas. There are at least two place where you can watch women make them out front:

In case anyone was wondering who was first with the handmade tortillas.

The colors of Mexico are all throughout Old Town:

Farmer’s Market

While strolling through a farmer’s market recently, I caught some sunshine. . . .

Some cosmos too.

Oh yes, there were vegetables. Fruit and nuts and fudge too. Ever tasted pattypan squash? I love squash, but haven’t tried this one.

I like that the sunflower on the right has a heart shape.

That’s Not a Plant, That’s a Streetrod

While strolling through the San Diego Botanic Gardens, we came across this beauty:

ford_streetrod_web

A 1934 Ford Streetrod, to be exact. I didn’t even know a car like this existed. There was a wedding taking place later in the day, so perhaps it was for photos? I love vintage cars that have been restored so beautifully.

ford_dash_web

The interior was as pristine as the exterior.

street_rod_side_web

See the rumble seat in the back? Riding in that has to be just a little bit scary.

ford_streetrod_front_web

At first glance, we thought it was a Jaguar because of the hood ornament. Then we got closer and saw the Ford logo.

ford_streetrod_ornament_web

This chrome greyhound attaches through the radiator cap and a replica will set you back $89.99.
I’m surprised that Ford used this, as Greyhound Bus Lines had been in existence since the 1920s.

What a great accessory for wedding photos.

Breakfast, anyone?

While waiting for my stepdaughter in a train station recently, I snapped these treats with the iPhone:

The strawberry cheesecake looked especially tempting, but we were due to have dinner in an hour, so I passed.

Great weekend, everyone!
