One night last month, we were leaving a restaurant and noticed a big crowd across the street. We walked over and saw classic “woodies” everywhere. For those not familiar, a woody is a station wagon with hardwood on the passenger compartment. Whenever I see them, I think of surfing and Southern California.
Anyway, despite the fact that I had only an iPhone and the cars were packed together with lots of people, I managed to get these shots:
Most of these vehicles are from the fifties. Can you believe how well-restored they are? Especially when you consider that the wood has been exposed to the elements for decades.
This one looked really old, but still beautiful. I thought the way the back opened was interesting too.
The red ones really stood out:
Four surfboards on this one, and they’re the old longboards. . . .
The plates were pretty cool too:
This shot and the previous two are instagrams.
Hope you all had a wonderful weekend.

Just love these cars. I used to have an old Morris Minor Traveller – a rather low budget 50’s English version of a “woody”:)
Very cool! I didn’t know about the Morris Minor Traveller until I did some research on line. Have seen them in Europe, but not over here.
Considering what wood on fences and houses looks like after a while in Socal sunshine, those cars show evidence of a lot of TLC!
I have a feeling that wood has been sanded and refinished many, many times. The manufacturers later went to simulated wood grain, but it’s just not the same.
hard to belive you took these pictures just recently. They look like old postcards. I didn’t know the name of these cars. Not likely one would see hem in Europe. Great. And they way they shine. The owners really love those cars.
Yes, I think the owners are slavishly devoted. š
These cars just scream surfing and beach to me. When I was in Calif a few years ago, I saw one parked at the beach. It wasn’t in as lovely condition as the cars in your photos, but it was still neat to see it “in action”.
They really do. I’m so glad we happened onto this car show.
“I’ve got a ’34 wagon and they call it a woody (surf city, here we come)” . . . WOW. Never was a Californian myself, but you’ve sure captured something here. I can only sit and gape. Good show!!
Awww, thanks!
I remember these! Oh how I wish I was there when you saw them. such memories.
Growing up in the Midwest, I only saw them in old movies, so it was pretty cool to be there. You need to come back and visit!
Love these woodies … they speak to another time in our past and make me wonder whether things were easier then? Fabulous array of images, Carole.
I sometimes wonder that too, Cheryl.
Reblogged this on Cheryl Andrews and commented:
Pearls & Prose has done it again, another stunning array of classic, vintage vehicles (and with her iPhone, which I am so envious of) … WOODIES! I asked her and now you, do you think life was easier back then? More nostalgia …
Your are too kind!
Reblogged this!

I’ve never seen vehicles like these – wow!
Thanks for dropping by!
I love old cars and I love to photograph them. The cars before the mid-60’s had great lines.
So do I. To me, they are works of art.
Welcome to the blog. š
Thank you. š
How is it that you’re always around these cool cars? š
Pure luck!
