I think my favorite town on Kauai was Koloa. We stopped there for lunch and ended up spending a couple of hours shopping and taking photos.
Lunch was here:
Tomkats Grille had a very relaxed, outdoor atmosphere with lots of plants and breezes:
This cat never budged when people walked up and down the steps.
The burgers were very good, but the dessert was to die for. Macadamia Nut Brownie Sundae!
Three of us could barely finish it.
The shops range from art to t-shirts. . . .
One place looked like an old gas station with this “mechanic” and vintage pump:
Loved the detail in the guy’s face.
There were some great signs on the building too.
One more “sculpture”:
I shared a view of the trees and mountains across the street a while back. Here’s another shot:
I love the blue on this fence.
We had to be careful not to run over or step on the wild roosters in Kauai. They’re similar to mainland roosters, but are much more colorful. The locals call them “Moa Kane,” or just Moa.
Someone told me they were brought over by the Polynesians. Legend has it that the only time a rooster crowed at midnight was when Christ was born. There are Rooster Masses at Roman Catholic churches throughout Hawaii, according to the Oahu Island News.
This place may be boarded up, but it still has that beautiful Hawaiian charm, don’t you think?
My blog posts are going to be a bit sporadic for a while. We are moving in a month and there’s soooo much to do. I do appreciate your patience. And welcome to the new subscribers!

Looks like you had a wonderful time and the last picture does it for me:)
It’s my favorite too. 🙂
That last picture… Fantastic. But I really like the kitty on the stairs as well.
Thanks, Caroline. I know you love cats. 🙂
That last photo does look like a place where an interesting story might happen. Funny about the cat at the restaurant. Evidently letting everyone know whose place it was.
I found out later that the cats roaming the place are wild!
I suppose that has something to do with how the place got its name!
Most likely. 🙂
great travelogue, beautiful colours, photos and dialogue..happy moving…
Thank you, and welcome to the blog!
I love everything about the sculpture of the man holding the puppy. The puppy is licking his face. His shirt is open. One eye is closed. So sweet!
Good luck with your move.
Thanks so much, Jackie.
The man with the puppy kind of reminds me of Al Roker on the Today Show!
Very cool! You’re moving? Lots of luck and courage. 🙂
Thanks so much, Jennie. We’ll need it!
A great glimpse of rural Hawaii. That desert does look amazing!
