For years I’ve been seeing photos of bikes in Amsterdam with one of the many canals in the background. So of course I was hoping to capture my own. No worries, bikes are everywhere. Not as many as in Copenhagen, but close. We even saw a parking garage for bicycles:
Had to watch really closely when crossing streets because bikers would come out of nowhere and nearly run us down. If you go, pay attention to the reddish-brown lanes–they’re for bikes–and look both ways, more than once.
Found my canal with bike shot.
And one more.
Would you believe the place with the awnings is the Hansel and Gretel Cafe? So cute.
I could have taken so many photos of bikes and canals, but we only had a day and a half and really wanted to see the Van Gogh Museum, the Riiksmuseum, Anne Frank house, etc. It was a bit of a challenge, but we hit them all.
Hope your week’s going well so far.

I had no idea there were more bikes in Copenhagen. It can be pretty dangerous when you don’t pay attention. It’s the same here only we don’t have so many.
Amsterdam’s a lovely city. I wouldn’t mind seeing it again.
Copenhagen is known as the “greenest” city in the world, but Amsterdam is second. I don’t have exact numbers, but there seemed to be a lot more bikes in Copenhagen when I was there. Can’t imagine how they bike in those cold, dark winters!
I had to laugh when I read your comment about the traffic. Crossing the street in Amsterdam was more difficult than crossing the street here in NYC. Between the bikes, trams, cars, and motorbikes, it was a challenge. 🙂
The Van Gogh Museum was my favorite!
You are so right, Jackie! Every time we’d think we were safe, something else would fly by. Very different from the U.S. where pedestrians have the right-of-way.
I loved the Van Gogh because he’s one of my favorites.
Definitely want to get to Amsterdam someday. I adored Copenhagen when I visited there in March and it seems like Amsterdam and Copenhagen have similar city vibes (though correct me if I’m wrong on that, as you’ve been to both). Great photos!
Thank you! I loved Copenhagen too and found Amsterdam to be a bit more crowded and dirty. It’s still worth visiting, though.
Wow thanks for sharing these pictures Carole!
My pleasure!
